QUESTION:
I received a question on my website from let's call her "Sheila". Sheila stated she relaxed her hair a few weeks ago and started to notice it would become very dry, damaged, and frizzy. She felt like her ends were fried and that split ends were starting to come in abundance.
ANSWER:
If you are in the same boat as Sheila. You are in need of some serious TLC to your strands. If your stylist, friends, or family are telling you that you need to trim your hair. Don't. I'm serious when I say that cutting your hair is not going to prevent any further breakage. (Split ends are a different story) So please remember that your hair grows from YOUR SCALP, not from the ends of your hair.
More importantly, the best remedy for badly damaged relaxed hair is to deep condition WITH THE PROPER PRODUCTS religiously. Think of hair as a “somewhat” blank canvass (slightly worn, dry, and cracked). You can put as much paint (in our case products) on top of the canvass that you want, but without fixing the foundation, you will still see the cracks and splits from underneath the paint. What I’m trying to say is, don’t expect your hair to look the you want it to without first deep conditioning your hair to get it into a healthy state. If the direction say to leave on for 2-5 minutes and rinse…. THIS IS NOT A DEEP CONDITIONER, it is a rinse out conditioner that coats the hair shaft, not penetrate it). If the product is a true deep conditioner, the directions will state to leave on for 15 -20 minutes. The product, especially for women of color, should be extra moisturizing. I prefer natural-based products because the ingredients that penetrate the hair shaft will keep your hair healthier for a longer period of time. Natural ingredients are always better.
